It is no secret that clay or heavy soil can be a pain to work with. Up at the allotment each plot has had to work with tough, compacted, thick clay soil. The individual plot holders have dealt with this in their own ways. Some have used grit and sand to break it up, some have used lots of organic matter like manure to break it up. Some used straw and some simply went with the (slightly more expensive) no dig method. No dig, I would like to add, is a FABULOUS method and if you have the space and bags of compost to fill the beds then all the more reason to do it.
